Pap smears are used to detect STI’s and cervical cancer. You should have a pap smear every year, regardless of your age. A normal test will show if you’re infected with an STI and may also indicate whether or not there is any sign that could lead to cervical cancer!
At Top Care Women’s Clinic, we recommend that you get your first pap smear done when you become sexually active. If you are scheduled to have an annual pap smear, but your last one was over two years ago, please feel free to come in for a routine checkup.
There are different types of pap smears. A routine smear is just a swab to check for any STI’s and cell changes possibly indicating cervical cancer. An abnormal pap smear indicates that there are changes in your cells, which might be caused by certain types of STI’s or the development of cervical cancer. More serious causes could include human papillomavirus (HPV) or Chlamydia.
A pap smear is a simple test that can save your life, so it’s well worth the slight discomfort! We hope you remember to have your annual test done when it comes up – just another reason why we love our job!
If you have any questions about a pap smear or what to expect during this simple test, the staff at Top Care Women’s Clinic are always available to answer them. We look forward to seeing you soon!
